Gitzo Mini Traveler tripod

200 Euros price tag for a Gitzo mini tripod?

When we heard that Gitzo, the Italian manufacturer of premium tripods and accessories, was showing a 200 Euro mini tripod at Photokina we just had to see it for ourselves. The Gitzo Mini Traveler Ball Head is, indeed, gorgeous can carry a full frame DSLR and only weighs 265g, but is it worth the price tag? A Gitzo mini tripod would always be special, but how special?

The Gitzo mini tripod is already available for pre-order in the UK via dealers for around £189. It uses the same kind of carbon fibre leg construction as its bigger counterparts in the Gitzo stable. It has a neat patent-pending  mechanism for switching each leg between standard and low positions. There is no thumb-wheel to tighten the tripod screw, unlike its Manfrotto Pixi cousin, but it’s lighter, smaller and stronger.

The aluminium ball head can safely carry an attached load locked in position up tp 3kg in weight, though there is no quick-release option. To unlock the ball head you rotate a collar at the base of the head. It’s available in grey and black.

The engineering, materials and design all look superb as you can see in our pictures. But it costs 200 Euros.

Three Legged Think and the Return of Brian

Award-winning British tripod maker, 3 Legged Thing announces the return of their iconic, hero, travel tripod, Brian, with new and refined features.

STAGSDEN, BEFORDSHIRE – 12th March 2018
He’s back! 3 Legged Thing’s most iconic tripod has been given an extensive facelift, and now joins 3LT’s Punks range of tripods. Thoroughly refined and improved, the new Punks Brian is a true travel tripod – lightweight for portability at only 1.45 kg / 3.1 lb, and compact for transportation, folding to just 41 cm / 16.5 “. Brian’s travel pedigree does not forsake any capability as his 2 column sections and 5 leg sections offer ultimate versatility, as well as a maximum height of 1.87 m / 74 “.

Danny Lenihan, 3 Legged Thing’s Founder & CEO explains the return: “Brian was our first ever tripod, and the catalyst for our naming trend, and inspiration for all the brands that have followed suit. We retired Brian after four incarnations – 1st Gen, 2nd Gen, Evo 2 and Evo 3, back in 2015, with a heavy heart. At the time we felt we needed a fresh angle. We’ve missed him every day since, and so I am so excited to announce his return, but this time as part of our iconic Punks range.”

The brand new Punks Brian will be unveiled at The Photography Show, which takes place at the NEC, Birmingham from 17-20th March 2018, and can be viewed at 3 Legged Thing’s exhibition stand no E71 throughout the show.

Designed and engineered in Stagsden, England, Punks Brian is made from eight layers of 100% pure pre-preg carbon fibre, and includes all the premium features users expect from 3 Legged Thing tripods. These include a detachable monopod leg; patented Tri-mount plate which allows the attachment of accessories; removable and reversible centre column; ultra-low-level shooting using the widest 80 ̊ leg angle; and ergonomic, water-dispersing bubble-grips which provide better leverage, even in damp conditions.

Like 3 Legged Thing’s other tripods, Brian includes modular functionality, enabling users to remove, attach and reconfigure elements of the tripod allowing a multitude of uses. This includes the removable centre column which allows use of the tripod as low as 11 cm / 4.3”, and can also be added to the detachable monopod leg to create an ultra-tall monopod that extends to 1.92 m / 75.5”.

Available in two colourways – grey and blue with copper accents; and matte black with accents of British Racing Green – Punks Brian additionally includes an AirHed Neo ballhead which incorporates two spirit level bubbles; a tough nylon drawstring carry bag; and rubber Bootz footwear which grip a variety of surfaces. Brian’s footwear can be changed to suit different terrains, and 3 Legged Thing offers Heelz, Clawz, and Stilettoz for sale separately.

Brian is available to pre-order from 12th March, and will be available online and via camera retailers worldwide from 2nd April 2018.

3 Legged Thing launches universal QR11 brackets

Press release issued by 3 Legged Thing:

3 Legged Thing is proud to introduce …
The QR11-LC & QR11-LG

British Tripod brand, 3 Legged Thing has launched its latest Universal L Bracket. The QR11-LC and QR11-LG are the result of six months of research and development, offering universal compatibility, accessory attachment and flat storage.

What’s the story?

The QR11 comes with triangular pads, designed to tessellate and provide as much surface contact as possible on the baseplate, which translates to more grip and a more secure connection. The base itself is the optimal length for most cameras, enabling more compatibility and better access to cable sockets. It features a quarter-inch threaded hole on the upright, for attaching other accessories, and a strap connector on both aspects.

“I really wanted to produce something cross-compatible with as many cameras as I could. I wanted to make something that is more than just an L-Bracket. Our Mission at 3 Legged Thing has always been to add as much value in innovation as we can to our products, and the QR11 is no exception,” said 3 Legged Thing’s Founder and Chief Executive, Danny Lenihan (pictured).

“I also wanted to produce something that was affordable,”said Lenihan. “So many L Brackets are upwards of $150 to $250, which is a lot of money for a student or any photographer, really. It’s important that we are as inclusive as we can be, so that photography enthusiasts on smaller budgets, can still have the opportunity to use an L Bracket. At $49.99, I think we’ve achieved that.”

The QR11 also has another neat trick – it can be disassembled in seconds, using the included multi-tool (3LT-TOOLZ) and stored flat, making it easier to transport and stow. It also comes in two colour options: Equinox Copper and Eclipse Grey, to suit your style.

3 Legged Thing idea to product insight

From Concept To Corey – A Product Journey

Three legged thing Corey

British Tripod Brand, 3 Legged Thing, famous for their innovation and quirky designs are offering an unprecedented opportunity to gain a unique insight into their production process of their latest launch – Punks Corey

#ConceptToCorey is a new project which documents the journey; from the very doodles of an idea, through to engineering CADs, photo-realisitic renders, prototyping and testing. It’s all here, laid bare for photographers and voyeurs of ‘how stuff works’  to get a handle on what goes into bringing a 3LT tripod to market.

The project will be chartered across Twitter and Instagram. “We have an incredible level of engagement across the regular social media platforms – those photographers who’ve used our tripods or just love our branding and style, feel that they have a direct way to communicate with us. We wanted to be able to share with them an interesting insight into how we bring our products to market.” commented 3LT’s Global Marketing Manager, Dan Crawford.

“It doesn’t even end at product launch” comments 3LT Founder and CEO, Danny Lenihan. “We quite often make small design adjustments and adaptations once we receive consumer feedback, after the launch. We want to be able to produce the best products we can, and who better to provide the inspiration for change than the many thousands of customers we have dotted around the world?”

The project is to end on Christmas Day. 3 Legged Thing promise to show some of the intricate details of the design work, and follow the critical path from Concept to Corey.
